Yeremia 23:32

Konteks
23:32 I, the Lord, affirm 1  that I am opposed to those prophets who dream up lies and report them. They are misleading my people with their reckless lies. 2  I did not send them. I did not commission them. They are not helping these people at all. 3  I, the Lord, affirm it!” 4

29:1 The prophet Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalem 5  to Babylon. It was addressed to the elders who were left among the exiles, to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the other people who were exiled in Babylon. 6

Yeremia 51:58

Konteks

51:58 This is what the Lord who rules over all 7  says,

“Babylon’s thick wall 8  will be completely demolished. 9

Her high gates will be set on fire.

The peoples strive for what does not satisfy. 10

The nations grow weary trying to get what will be destroyed.” 11

[23:32]  1 tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

[23:32]  2 tn Heb “with their lies and their recklessness.” This is an example of hendiadys where two nouns (in this case a concrete and an abstract one) are joined by “and” but one is intended to be the adjectival modifier of the other.

[23:32]  3 sn In the light of what has been said this is a rhetorical understatement; they are not only “not helping,” they are leading them to their doom (cf. vv. 19-22). This figure of speech is known as litotes.

[23:32]  4 tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

[29:1]  6 tn Jer 29:1-3 are all one long sentence in Hebrew containing a parenthetical insertion. The text reads “These are the words of the letter which the prophet Jeremiah sent to the elders…people whom Nebuchadnezzar had exiled from Jerusalem to Babylon after King Jeconiah…had gone from Jerusalem by the hand of Elasah…whom Zedekiah sent…saying, ‘Thus says the Lord…’” The sentence has been broken up for the sake of contemporary English style and clarity.

[51:58]  7 sn See the note at Jer 2:19.

[51:58]  8 tn The text has the plural “walls,” but many Hebrew mss read the singular “wall,” which is also supported by the ancient Greek version. The modifying adjective “thick” is singular as well.

[51:58]  9 tn The infinitive absolute emphasizes the following finite verb. Another option is to translate, “will certainly be demolished.”

[51:58]  10 tn Heb “for what is empty.”

[51:58]  11 tn Heb “and the nations for fire, and they grow weary.”
